Ready to get started?

Good morning and welcome to 40 Days + 40 Writes. A quick reminder of how this program works:

  1. Monday to Saturday (not Sunday), you will get a prompt email. You can write something inspired by the prompt, or if you like, something else.

  2. You don’t have to write a lot. Just 10 minutes of actual writing time (not thinking or reading time) is fine to start. Time reporting is on the honor system, but I use my iPhone timer.

  3. Turn in your writing on the Workout page. You can get there from the home page, or the button in your prompt email. You’ll need your flock’s password to access the page; this is to prevent cross-flock contamination.

  4. Your username is entered at the end of the writing form. Please get your username right. Pretty please. It screws everything up if you don’t.

  5. You didn’t ask for it, but here’s my advice: Do not do your writing in the form itself. Write it in Text pad or notebook or Word or Google Docs, then paste it in to the form. If you write in the form, sooner or later, you will lose your work. I have done it myself. A guy who routinely wrote 1,500 words a day once submitted only the words, “Grape and gorgonzola pizza.” Everything he’d typed wiped out by an errant command-V.

Sorry, this is getting long. I’ll say just one more thing: this little digital system is going to keep track of how much you write, how fast and how often. You may or may not care. But if you do, know this: the standings reflect how many different dates you turned in work, not how many pieces you turned in. Write two pieces in one day? That’s still one day in the standings.

This is not a competition, but just a tool to keep track of what you’ve accomplished.

Happy to have you on board. Email me if you have questions or trouble that you can’t sort out.
