Ready to get started?

Good morning, and welcome to 40 Days + 40 Writes for Lent 2019. A quick reminder of how this program works:

  1. Monday to Saturday (not Sunday), you will get an email like this one with a writing prompt.

  2. You can write something inspired by the prompt, or by the day’s recommended reading. Here, for instance, are the readings for today, Ash Wednesday. You don’t have to write a lot. Just 10 minutes of actual writing time (not thinking or reading time) is fine to start.

  3. Turn in your writing on the Workout page before 2 a.m. PDT. Please use the username I sent you on Monday. The password to open the workout submission form is Raven. The rest is pretty explanatory.

  4. You didn’t ask for it, but here’s my advice: Do not do your writing in the form itself. Write it in Text pad or notebook or Word or Pages and paste it in. If you write in the form, sooner or later, you will lose your work. I have done it myself. A guy who routinely wrote 1,500 words a day once submitted only the words, “Grape and gorgonzola pizza.” Everything he’d typed wiped out by an errant command-V.

Sorry, this is getting long. I’ll say just one more thing: this little digital system is going to keep track of how much you write, how fast and how often. You may or may not care. But if you do, know this: the standings reflect how many DAYS you turned in work, not how many pieces you turned in. Write two pieces in one day? That’s still one day in the standings. But this is not a competition, but just a tool to keep track of what you’ve accomplished.
