You don't have to be a theologian to know that a lot can happen over 40 days: new beginnings, promises, trials and revelations.

40 Days + 40 Writes is not a typical writing workshop. Here’s how it works: Daily writing prompts go out by email at 2 a.m., and you have 24 hours to turn in what you write that day.

Simple, right? There’s no critiquing or rewriting or mandatory feedback. Instead, 40 Days + 40 Writes delivers a daily nudge and then provides the digital space, the peer group, and the ticking clock to help you start writing and keep it up. The point is just doing the writing. Every day.

The philosophy around here is that writing is a tool for thinking, a way of gathering up unformed ideas and bringing them to the part of your mind where you can examine them. What you do with those ideas after that is up to you.

Why Write for 40 Days?

Here’s what some recent participants had to say:

“Forty Days and Forty Writes gives me permission to pay myself first. It's a deadline and a place to do a deep dive or shallow wade into remembering something and capturing the words in a finite amount of time.... It's like calisthenics for the brain and I think I have threads to a memoir now. I know I do.”

“Joan Didion said she writes to know what she thinks, and that's why I found the 40-Day experience gratifying. The month-plus exercise made me feel better by sitting down to... well, to know what I think.”

+ + +

"I needed just a little nudge, some help to get myself writing again after many years of not taking myself seriously enough. Having an email prompt come in every morning was just what I needed. Not strict, but structured enough to help me stay focused and not make excuses.”

"I learned that I can find some time to write every day, and I learned (and am still learning) about myself as a writer. And, I have a body of work from each session that gives me a real sense of accomplishment (and an idea bank in case I ever need one)."

+ + +

“40 Days + 40 Writes led to the discovery of seeds of stories that I never knew lived  inside of me. At the end of the session, I had a curious autobiography as well as springboards for future unwritten works.”

+ + +

"A fun experience that helps focus your writing, while often triggering memories you didn't know you had."

+ + +

"A bite-size way to get in the habit of putting your thoughts on paper (online). A few lines can be the spark for an intriguing essay, or more. And it's great fun reading what others come up with."

+ + +

“40 Days and 40 Writes gave me structured space and celebratory discipline.”

+ + +

“I never expected myself to write this consistently… The reason I got enrolled for the 40Days + 40Writes was to check on my resolve which proved itself intact!”
